White Bordeaux wine is not very commonly found on restaurant menus in the United States. I think it is because most of the time Americans think Bordeaux and automatically think red. As you may know, in the United States you get a Pinot Noir (grape type) from the wine shop and sometimes with French wines you do not even know the breakdown of the grape. In fact, my brother and mother got into a debate on whether white Bordeaux wine exists. I can tell you that it does, which brings us to the 2012 Chateau Recougne Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon.
This wine comes from Underground Cellars and is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon. I could not find the tasting notes online but thankfully they did put it on the back of the bottle. They do however have the notes for the new 2013 vintage and from everything I have read the vintages stay pretty consistent every year along with the blend. Here is from the back of the bottle:
Hillside vineyard. Harvested at day break to preserve aromatic freshness. Grape sorting followed by gentle pressuring.
Exuberant overtones of grapefruit and green apple. Fresh and vibrant on the palate.
Well chilled the wine is delicious as an aperitif or with shell fish or fish dishes.
Bolding by them. So how was it? Is it that consistent. Spoiler alert: yes.
Color – Very light transparent yellow.
Nose – Apricots, lemon, and slight pineapple/grapefruit juice.
Taste – Little bit of mango but mostly what they describe grapefruit and green apples.
Finish – medium for a white and medium acid with good fresh mouth feel.
Overall, there is not too much to add to this. They did a really good job of describing this wine and the wine is exactly what you expect. I am beginning to like white Bordeaux wines more and more.
