Screen Shot 2015-01-29 at 2.19.02 PMThere are a few times that I read a review of a wine and I say to myself, I get that spot on. It was really the motivation of this website. While my palate matures, can I find the same things that the experts find in the wine or is it complete bullshit? Nowadays, it surprises me when there are wines that I just really do not like and yet they still have decent descriptions and ratings.

(Spoiler alert) This brings us to the 2008 Ciu Ciu Oppidum Marche Rosso from Italy. This is 100% Montepulciano grape, which I normally really enjoy. Here is the link to their website, which can be roughly translated by Google.

The tasting notes come from The Wine Spies, who ran a deal on this wine a little while back:

Smell – Rich and expansive with lots of dark fruit including plum and black cherry. Earthy and green herbal notes meld with anise and hints of cigar tobacco and smoke.

Feel – Smooth and dry, this full-bodied wine has easy acidity, a kick of spice and firm but well developed tannins, resulting in a chewy and plush feel. After breathing a bit, the wine becomes cool on the tongue and smooth but remains well structured.

Taste – Plush, rich and round with jammy red & black plum and ripe black cherry melding with earthy and herbal notes and a touch of white pepper. Hints of wild anise along with the cigar tobacco and mocha from the nose adds complexity and depth.

Finish – Clean and long with this wine’s firm and well developed tannins framing the ripe fruit and lingering licorice and mocha begs for another sip

So what did I think?

Color – Bright ruby red.

Nose – Black cherry and plum jam with licorice.

Taste – Plum and boysenberry jam.

Finish – Long with medium to high acid and medium to high tannins.

Overall, this wine was terrible in mouthfeel. Talk about jammy. I am not a huge fan of your mouth being coated in a high acid jam. It is very simple and not as complex as they say above. All I wanted was one glass and same went for my wife. We poured the rest out. Sorry Ciu Ciu.
