Happy Holidays to everyone and I hope that everyone received better wine then they gave. All kidding aside now that I have been collecting wine and I am not realizing that there are plenty of wines that say drink now or drink 2014 and I haven’t even touched them.
With a few days left in the year I did finally pull out the 2000 Spelletich Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and spoiler alert found this wine to be possibly past it’s peak. I have never had a wine past it’s peak but I will describe to you in this review and you tell me. I know what a bad bottle of wine is like because it tastes and smells like vinegar. This time was different.
I will tell you that people were still giving it proper review in 2013 but that Cellar Tracker says to drink it before 2007. I also thought Cabernet Sauvignon is supposed to hold up pretty well. I did not find any tasting notes so here is what is on the back of the bottle:
100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Barrel Aged 21 Months
French & Hungarian Oak
1342 cases produced
So how was it? Or maybe I already told you.
Color – Deep dark red.
Nose – Almost smelled bad with a little vinegary and blackberry.
Taste – Tart and bitter with black cherry and a little earth.
Finish – Long with high acid and bold tannins.
Overall, it was drinkable but not enjoyable. I am assuming it is past it’s prime and hold on to that days past this wine was good. It’s structure felt fine but the taste was not great.
