Screen shot 2014-05-05 at 6.45.36 PMHere we are again with another wine from Naked Wines. I guess when you get a case for near free, you have to drink it. Oh darn! I move their wines to the front because most of their wines are screw cap and taste really young. I think the verdict is still out on whether screw cap wines can age but I err on the side of “I am sure they do but it takes a while.” I assume I will be old and grey by the time we get the final answer on that one. This then brings us to the 2012 Small and Small At Large Syrah.

One thing I can tell you is that these winemakers, Bill & Claudia Small, really care a whole lot about their wine and how people rate it. On the Naked Wines website, they respond to almost every serious comment good or bad about their wine. Nice touch. I also picked up from the comments that they usually reside in New Zealand and make wine but that this was a changed for them to make California wine during a sabbatical. This is a one shot wine so it makes me really excited to try it.

Some of the stats on the site are that 81% of the people who bought it would buy it again. It goes well with roasted lamb. The “normal” price is $23.99 and the Angel price is $12.99.

I will say that the winemaker recommends laying it down for a while and it will mellow more out. Is this going to be too harsh and fruity like some of the other Naked Wines?

Color – Dark on the borderline of inky.

Nose – Little bit of leather. Hint of black cherry but this wine is not very aromatic.

Taste – Tart bite at the end of your tongue. It has a lot of earthy tones like leather and oak. It finishes with a little bit of spiced dark fruit.

Finish – Long lingering and really is a mouth-full. This one is probably not for the ones with porous teeth, like me.

Overall, I would say this is a whole hell of a lot better than a lot of the wines of Naked Wines. This one doesn’t taste too young and it is complex enough to enjoy on its on and hearty enough to stand up to a good piece of meat. If you are a Naked Wine member, I would highly recommend picking up a bottle of this. If you are a Naked Wine member and you looked back at my previous posts and thought I was crazy this one is probably going to be too much for you.
